Biography
Growing up in the small remote village of Causeway Co.kerry Ireland, Nayome knew from a very young age that the entertainment business was the only business for her...........
The stage lights beamed down upon me and the other cast members as the leading lady swished around the stage in her billowing yellow dress singing “ Getting to know you, getting to know all about you.” I watched the dark auditorium packed to the brim with shadowed figures watching her intently and enjoying the performance unfolding before them.
I was three and I was playing the youngest child in a performance of “The King And I.” It was tremendously exciting and everything was going perfectly apart from one small problem…………. the audiences’ attention was not on me!! And now that just wouldn’t do! Matters had to be taken into my own hands and the focus had to be changed abruptly. Crawling across the stage to the focal point of the audiences’ eyes, I sat beside the “current” star of the play (for it wouldn’t be long before I stole the show and took my rightful part). I began to lift up the ladies dress and peek under it.
(It was quite fascinating though how those dresses managed to poof out like a meringue all on there own.) I began to hear giggles from the audience. It was working!! I continued. Maybe it was time to completely crawl beneath the dress and reappear the other side…like a magic trick… laughter echoed from the dark seats. Mission accomplished! I smiled back. I could tell they appreciated my work. Of course the stage director didn’t appreciate my improv skills and as soon as the curtain fell for half time I was told off! She didn’t get it though… but the audience liked me and in the world of show business, that’s all that mattered!!!
Not much changed as my three-year-old world became a five year old’s world.
Lift the red velvet curtain and cue…. Me. This time I was properly cast as the star of the show. It was my schools Christmas production of “Sleeping Beauty” and well you don’t have to be a genius to guess what part I played. Skip forward to the part where the prince approaches Beauty and is about to kiss her to wake her from her one hundred years of sleep. Now I must stress that I was working with amateurs and of course my co-star, the Prince was just that. He froze when it came to the kiss! Now it was intended to be a pretend kiss… he was going to pull his cloak across our faces (to hide from the audience) and lean down and pretend to kiss me. At this point the audience was screaming “Kiss her” and the prince was just standing there… he’d lean in and pull out and start laughing nervously!! Totally stalling the whole show…. Once again I had to save the production from total disaster and so in a twist to the usual Sleeping Beauty story…Beauty wakes up herself and grabbing hold of the prince’s shirt, pulls him down to give her a kiss!!! A real one!! The audience erupted in laughter and applause!! The prince turned red and stepped back in shock and Beauty just leapt up from her sleep and delivered her next line!! Phew!!!
My dream had always been to be an actress, I mean I could sing and I knew I could sing pretty well but I always thought that that’s what my older sister Fiona would be. I would hear her belting out songs along with Celine Dion or Mariah Carey in her bedroom. In my head I thought she would be a famous singer, I would be a famous actress and well my baby sister Eve…. I hadn’t quite figured her out yet. Maybe she could be my assistant or something…she didn’t seem to do much but follow me around and cry if I told her to go away!! It wasn’t until a few years later that she actually revealed to us that she too had been blessed with a singing voice. I guess I’d have to find someone else to take the assistants job.
I joined forces with my two sisters over the years following. We formed a singing group based around our unique ability to harmonise like one voice and after bringing out an Irish album independently and travelling back and forth to the United states on invitations to sing for Gov. George Pataki on St.Patricks day for two years and our hometown we left the green shores of Co.Kerry Ireland behind to settle in one of the meccas of the entertainment world New York City.
While the music group grows ever stronger my yearning to return to acting does as well and so on days when we are not writing or recording I attend as many acting classes as possible, like the advanced scene study class taught by the great acting coach Peter Kelley, or intensive workshops with top casting directors like Howard Meltzer and Rob Decina. And of course I put my writing skills to use , channeling it in the form of scripts. I am never going to give up on my dream, never, because i dont know how to do anything else. The little three year old girl knew what she wanted then and it hasn't changed..... the show must always go on.
